Abstract
Outdoor structures can be compromised by the presence of microbes, fouling organisms, and termites in building materials. Traditional measures taken to preserve the integrity of these structures often come at the cost of the local ecosystem and require frequent reapplication and maintenance. This paper reviews the consequences of historically used boric acid treatment on termites and proposes an alternative, low-toxicity intervention. The impact of boric acid treatments on termite physiology and ecological stressors on urban and suburban areas is explored, as well as the environmental consequences of termite eradication in urban and suburban areas. Results from this study show that samples containing SCHN 146 (self-cleaning hydrophobic nanocoating) and SCHN 146 Premium showed no significant difference in termite mortality but no significant effect on the termites’ feeding behavior, and therefore a lack of deterrence. Samples 145 treated with a homogenous mixture of SCHN 146 with borates showed significant termite-killing effects that sealed wood surfaces and eliminated termites quickly. The wood treatment method studied in this paper is concluded to be an appealing alternative in the pest management industry for creating a safer and environmentally sustainable solution to termite infestations.
