Granny's House

Abstract

My Granny was born in the early 1900s just after the turn of the century. She saw two World Wars, the Depression, and lived through much more. She married when she was 20 years old and went on to have nine children. While caring for kids, she worked the farm with Grampa, cared for the garden, and made every meal from scratch. As the “girls” (her daughters) got old enough, they pitched in. Everyone in my family has their own memories of Granny, but nearly all of us can tell you about Sunday dinners at her house and her cooking. She’s been gone 45 years this summer, yet her influence as matriarch is still felt throughout the family. She is and was one of the most influential people in my life and I still wish I could go and talk to her over making biscuits or snapping beans. I wrote this free verse poem centered around the five senses and sense-memory in one of my classes and made some updates for P&R.
